Building Community Through Civic Engagement at Harrison Park Towers

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a “Meet the Leaders” event hosted by Ms. Fran McClain and Lolita Cruz at Harrison Park Towers in East Orange. The event brought together residents, community stakeholders, and local leaders for an important conversation about the issues impacting our neighborhoods and the future of Essex County.

I am deeply grateful to Ms. McClain and Ms. Cruz for organizing such a thoughtful and welcoming event. Opportunities like these are critical because they create space for residents to ask questions, voice concerns, and engage directly with those seeking to represent them. Civic engagement starts with conversations, and events like this remind us of the power communities have when people come together and participate.

Throughout the evening, we discussed the importance of community involvement, public safety, economic opportunity, housing, and ensuring that every resident feels seen and heard. One of the most meaningful parts of the event was hearing directly from residents about their lived experiences and the changes they hope to see in our county. Listening to the community is one of the most important responsibilities of public service, and I remain committed to leading with transparency, accountability, and compassion.

As we move closer to Election Day on June 2, I encourage everyone to stay engaged in the democratic process. Early voting has already begun, making it easier for residents to cast their ballots and make their voices heard. Voting is one of the most powerful tools we have to shape the future of our communities and ensure leadership reflects the needs and values of the people.

Thank you again to Ms. Fran McClain, Lolita Cruz, and everyone who attended the event. Your participation and commitment to civic engagement are what make our communities stronger.

Together, we can continue building a more inclusive, responsive, and empowered Essex County.
