A Seat at the Table: A Juneteenth Reflection on Black Women, Leadership, and the Future of Essex County.

I am honored to be recognized alongside fellow Democratic nominee Adorian Murray-Thomas as #19 on Insider NJ's Insider 100: Rising Generations list.

Receiving this recognition on the eve of Juneteenth makes it especially meaningful. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but it is also a reflection on the long journey toward equity, opportunity, and representation. It is a time to honor those who fought for the right to vote, the right to lead, and the right to have their voices heard in the decisions that shape our communities.

As a Black woman in public service, I understand that my presence in leadership spaces is rooted in the sacrifices of those who came before me. Generations of Black women organized, advocated, educated, and mobilized communities while confronting barriers that often sought to exclude them from positions of influence. Their perseverance created pathways for leaders like me to serve.

That is why this recognition is about more than an individual accomplishment. It is a reflection of the progress made possible by those who believed that leadership should look like the people it serves.

I am particularly proud to share this recognition with Adorian Murray-Thomas, another Black woman committed to public service and community empowerment. Together, as Democratic nominees for the Essex County Board of County Commissioners, we represent a new generation of leadership that is grounded in service, accountability, and a commitment to improving the lives of all residents.

Essex County is strengthened by its diversity. Our communities are rich with culture, history, and the contributions of Black and Brown people from across the African Diaspora. Effective leadership requires not only understanding those communities but ensuring they have a seat at the table and a voice in shaping the future.

As we look ahead to November, I remain committed to advocating for policies that improve quality of life, expand economic opportunity, support small businesses, strengthen infrastructure, invest in youth and seniors, and ensure county government remains responsive to the people it serves.

The words of Fannie Lou Hamer continue to resonate today: "Nobody's free until everybody's free." Her message reminds us that progress is never guaranteed—it must be protected, nurtured, and advanced by each generation.

This Juneteenth, I celebrate the legacy of those who paved the way, the communities that continue to inspire us, and the promise of a future where leadership is reflective of the people it serves.
