Building Community-Powered Change: My Conversation with SOMA Action
This week, I had the opportunity to sit down with SOMA Action, a grassroots organization rooted in South Orange and Maplewood and dedicated to advancing progressive change at the local level. I’m grateful for the chance to be part of such a thoughtful and engaging conversation with community members who are deeply invested in the future of Essex County’s 3rd district.
What stood out most about this interview was the depth of commitment to people-first leadership. Organizations like SOMA Action play a critical role in ensuring that government remains accessible, accountable, and responsive to the needs of everyday residents. Their work is a reminder that real change doesn’t start at the top—it starts in our neighborhoods, with engaged and informed communities.
During our discussion, we talked about some of the issues that matter most to residents across our county. These are not abstract ideas; they are real challenges that require practical, community-driven solutions.
I also appreciated the opportunity to share more about my approach to leadership. I believe that effective leadership begins with listening—truly understanding the concerns, experiences, and priorities of the people we serve. It also requires a willingness to make tough decisions, stay grounded in our values, and always keep the focus on delivering results that improve people’s lives.
Spaces like this matter. They create room for dialogue, accountability, and shared vision. I’m thankful to SOMA Action for fostering this kind of engagement and for the work they continue to do to uplift voices across South Orange, Maplewood, and beyond.
