Reflections from Newark’s State of the City Address

Last night, I had the honor of attending Mayor Ras Baraka’s State of the City address in Newark at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. The energy in the room was inspiring, full of pride, resilience, and a shared commitment to our city’s future. As a candidate for District 3 Commissioner, I wanted to attend this address to hear about the plans for Newark as I seek to represent the residents of the West Ward.

Mayor Baraka highlighted the progress Newark has made over the past year, emphasizing that these accomplishments are the result of community effort and dedication. The key initiatives he highlighted included:

  • Expanding access to trauma support programs that have served thousands, helping families and youth heal and thrive.
  • Increasing affordable housing units
  • Building economic development initiatives that support the working class families throughout each ward
  • Reinforcing sustainability by planting new trees and funding community gardens
  • Supporting families negatively impacted by federal funding cuts
  • Creating opportunities for young people to pursues higher education
  • Supporting small business development

What stood out most was Mayor Baraka’s call for unity and collaboration. He reminded us that progress isn’t just about projects, it’s about people working together to build a stronger, safer, and more equitable city. Attending this address was a powerful reminder that Newark has always been a place defined by resilient people. I left inspired, hopeful, and even more motivated to contribute to the city’s growth and success.
