National Night Out: Celebrating the Power of Community

There are few events that capture the spirit of community quite like National Night Out.

This year, I had the privilege of spending the evening with residents in Orange, South Orange, and the West Ward of Newark, celebrating alongside families, neighbors, community organizations, and our first responders. It was an evening filled with conversation, laughter, music, and a shared commitment to building safer and stronger neighborhoods.

I am especially grateful to Mayor Dwayne Warren for taking me throughout Orange and allowing me to experience the incredible community spirit on display. It was inspiring to see so many residents come together in celebration.

National Night Out serves as an important reminder that public safety extends beyond emergency response. Safe communities are built through relationships. They are built when neighbors know one another, when children have safe places to play, when families gather outdoors, and when residents take pride in the neighborhoods they call home.

One of the most meaningful parts of the evening was watching children put down their phones and tablets to play outside with friends. Neighbors who may not have spoken in months shared conversations, meals, and laughter. Community organizations connected residents with valuable resources, while local leaders and first responders engaged with the people they serve in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

These moments matter because they strengthen trust, foster understanding, and remind us that we all have a role to play in creating vibrant communities.

I also want to express my deepest appreciation to our police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and every first responder who serves our communities each day. Their dedication often requires tremendous personal sacrifice. Behind every shift is a family that waits, hopes, and prays for their loved one's safe return home. Their service deserves not only our gratitude but our continued support.

As your candidate for Essex County Commissioner, I believe our responsibility is to invest in the conditions that help communities thrive. That means supporting public safety while also investing in our parks, community spaces, youth programs, neighborhood events, and local organizations that bring people together. Strong communities are built not only through policy but through connection.

National Night Out reminds us that despite our differences, we are neighbors first. When we come together, we build trust. When we build trust, we strengthen our communities. And when our communities are strong, everyone benefits.

Thank you to everyone who organized these wonderful events and to every resident who came out to participate. I look forward to continuing to listen, learn, and work alongside you as we build an Essex County where every neighborhood feels safe, connected, and full of opportunity.
