Orange Democrats Come Together

I had the pleasure of attending the Orange Democratic Committee’s meeting this weekend, and I left feeling encouraged about the work happening in our communities. This was Chairwoman Adrienne Wooten’s first meeting in her new role, and I was glad to be there to support her and join Orange Democrats for an afternoon centered around something I care deeply about: civic engagement.

One of the things I’ve learned throughout my career in public service and community leadership is that democracy only works when people choose to participate in it.

That participation can look different for everyone. Sometimes it means voting. Sometimes it means attending a community meeting, talking to your neighbors, learning about the candidates on the ballot, or simply taking the time to understand what’s happening in your community.

But it all starts with showing up.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet with Orange Democrats, connect with candidates who will be on the ballot this November, and have conversations about the issues that matter to residents. These kinds of gatherings are important because they give people an opportunity to connect with one another and, just as importantly, to feel connected to the democratic process.

As I continue this campaign for Essex County Commissioner in District 3, I want to make sure that my campaign is about more than November 3rd. I want it to be about building relationships and encouraging people to stay engaged with their communities long after an election is over.

Our district, which includes Orange, East Orange, South Orange, and the West Ward of Newark, is filled with people who care deeply about where we live. We have so much to be proud of, and we have important work ahead of us. I believe our communities are strongest when residents know that their voices matter and feel empowered to use them. 

So, as we head toward November, I encourage everyone to get involved. Learn about the candidates. Ask questions. Talk to your neighbors. Stay informed. And, of course, make a plan to vote.

I’m looking forward to continuing to show up, listen, and work alongside the people of District 3. Change doesn’t happen when we sit on the sidelines. It happens when we show up.
