Showing Up and Listening: A Conversation with the South Orange Democratic Committee

I was grateful for the opportunity to speak with the South Orange Democratic Committee and spend time with community leaders who care deeply about the future of South Orange Village and Essex County.

South Orange is an important part of District 3, and conversations like these are an important part of how I approach public service. Before asking for a vote of support, It is important to me to listen actively, to hear what residents are experiencing, understand their priorities, and ask the questions necessary to turn those conversations into meaningful action.

I had the opportunity to talk about my vision for serving as Essex County Commissioner and the issues that matter to residents across District 3, from infrastructure and economic opportunity to supporting working families, seniors, young people, and our small businesses. But just as important as sharing my own priorities is hearing directly from the people who know their communities best, the devoted district leaders of South Orange.

My favorite Shirley Chisholm quote is, “Service is the rent we pay for living on this earth.” To me, that means showing up, rolling up my sleeves, listening with humility, and doing the work — not just when it is convenient, but consistently.

I am thankful to the South Orange Democratic Committee for welcoming me and for the opportunity to continue building relationships across our community. Thank you to co-chairs Ritu and Joe for having me at the meeting, and I look forward to continuing these conversations, earning the trust of District 3 residents, and working together to build an Essex County where every community has the opportunity to thrive.
